Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a chronic mental disorder that impairs functioning and development of the brain, impacting many aspects of daily life. It’s symptoms begin in childhood, and can affect individuals well until their adulthood. The symptoms of this condition includes difficulty directing attention or focus to certain tasks (inattention), excessive movement and trouble staying still (hyperactivity), and lack of impulse control or tendency to act hastily before thinking (impulsivity). 

1. Predominantly Inattentive (ADHD-PI)

inattentive, lacking in hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms

2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive (ADHD PH-I)

hyperactivity & impulsivity, lacking inattentive symptoms

3. Combined Type (ADHD-C)

both inattentive & hyperactive/impulsive symptoms

4. Not Otherwise Specified Type (ADHD-NOS):

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

  • older term for ADHD
  • characterization of ADHD where there is more inattention that hyperactivity
  • term has been replaced with ADHD to include all presentations of the disorder

Accommodations

  • changes made to learning environment to better serve children / students with special needs or learning disabilities
  • examples
    • extension of deadlines/time
    • different testing location
    • difference in how the material is taught/presented

Behavior Therapy

  • taught by mental health professional
  • teaches how to identify interconnection between thoughts, feelings, behaviors
  • helps you learn new skills replacing negative behaviors with positive ones

Executive Dysfunction

  • symptom in which your brain’s ability to control thoughts, emotions and behavior are disrupted
  • common in people with adhd

Hyperfocus

  • deep intense fixation on an activity, event, or topic for an extended period of time
  • tends to occur in people with adhd on things that interest them in particular

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD)

  • when you experience severe emotional pain because of a failure, or feeling of rejection
  • linked to adhd
  • brain can’t regulate rejection-related emotions and behaviors, making them more intense
  • not an officially recognized symptom or diagnosis, but is a commonly used term in the adhd community

Stimulant Medication

  • medication that stimulates/increases certain activity in body’s nervous system, such as production and activity of neurotransmitters
  • most meds for adhd treatment are stimulant medication
  • help improve with alertness and awareness, and ability to focus
